Major (Course): Agricultural Entomology

Program: MSc

Introduction:

Entomology is a branch of zoology (the study of animals) that studies insects and how they interact with their environment, other species and humans. Insect pests are still one of the primary threats to successful crop production and causes unacceptable economic damage annually. With many broad spectrum pesticides being de-registered for use, the establishment of more and more high-income crops, the invasion of exotic alien pests and the pressures to meet the demands of the export market, the need for research in this field is higher than ever.  The study of insects serves as the basis for developments in biological and chemical pest control, pharmaceuticals, food production and storage, mapping biological diversity and other fields of science. The focus of the agricultural entomology unit is not only insect pests, but also the beneficial arthropods found in the agroecosystem that contribute to ecosystem services such as biological control and pollination.
